We try to source our raw materials as locally as possible. A great example of local sourcing is Fazer’s oat oil, in which the oat is grown and the oil extracted in Finland, and also just a short shipping distance from our Finnish factory. The oat oil is used in our Softening Face Oil, All-Around Balm, Light Face Cream and Rich Face Cream.
Next to origin we focus on ethical and sustainable sourcing, going for renewable resources. We avoid silicones and petrochemicals for environmental reasons, as petrochemicals are non-renewable and silicones do not biodegrade.
We do use the much debated palm oil in the form of derivatives (e.g. fatty alcohol), but have opted for RSPO (Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil) certification. The RSPO has developed a set of environmental and social criteria which companies must comply with in order to produce Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). When they are properly applied, these criteria can help to minimise the negative impact of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities in palm oil-producing regions. It is also good to bear in mind that even regular palm oil delivers the highest crop yield of all vegetable oils, meaning it requires a smaller amount of land to grow on, using less water and less resources, making it a sustainable choice. Read more at rspo.org. For example, the emulsifier we use in our Light Face Cream, polyglyceryl-6 distearate, is derived from RSPO certified palm oil.
Argan oil is a versatile, high quality base oil with an balanced fatty acid composition. We use it in our Softening Face Oil and All-Around Balm, and the oil we use is sourced from Morocco, via European distributors.
Our lab is run by our head of R&D, cosmetic chemist Jaana Ailus, who has a degree in cosmetic science from London College of Fashion as well as solid and wide formulation expertise. Jaana is also completing her PhD in cosmetic chemistry from John Moore's in Liverpool.
